If you watch anime, you have seen this flower. A field of thin red petals appears, the music drops, and you know someone is about to die, lose themselves, or cross a line they cannot uncross. The flower is the red spider lily, higanbana in Japanese, and it earned that job over about a thousand years of real history.
What does the red spider lily mean?
In Japan the red spider lily stands for final goodbyes, the dead, and people who are parted and will not meet again. It also marks the arrival of autumn. Older, gentler readings exist too, including reunion and rebirth, but farewell is the one most people reach for first.
Why it is called higanbana
Higan is a Buddhist observance held around each equinox, when families visit and tend their ancestors' graves. The word means "the other shore." In Buddhist teaching that shore is enlightenment, but in everyday Japanese it came to mean the far bank of the Sanzu River, the river the dead cross. The flower blooms right at the autumn higan, so it became the higan flower.
It has more than fifty other regional names in Japan, and most of them are not subtle: shibitobana, "dead person's flower," and jigokubana, "hell flower," are two of the better known.
Manjushage, the brighter name
The flower's other famous name, manjushage, comes from a mythical flower in the Lotus Sutra, usually described as a red blossom that falls from the heavens. So the same plant carries a heavenly name and a graveyard name at once. That double meaning is a big part of why storytellers love it: it can signal an ending or a new beginning, depending on who is looking.
Every one of them was planted by someone
This is the detail we like best. The spider lily came to Japan from China, probably alongside rice farming, and the Japanese variety is sterile. It cannot make seeds. It only spreads when its bulbs divide or when a person digs one up and plants it somewhere else. The red lines you see along Japanese rice fields, riverbanks, and temple paths did not arrive by accident. Generations of people put them there.
Why it grows by rice fields and graves
They had a practical reason. The bulbs are poisonous, mainly because of a compound called lycorine, and farmers planted them around rice paddies to keep mice and other burrowing animals away. Tradition holds that they were planted around graves for the same reason, to keep animals from disturbing burials. A flower that was always found beside the dead picked up a reputation to match, along with the custom that you never give one as a gift.
The poison is real, so admire them where they grow and keep bulbs away from pets and children. There is a twist, though: the same plant contains galantamine, a compound used in medicine for Alzheimer's disease. The death flower is also, quite literally, a source of medicine.
The flower that never meets its leaves
A spider lily's flowers and leaves are never out at the same time. The blooms rise on bare stalks in early autumn, and the leaves only come up after the flowers have died back. Japanese has a saying for it, hamizu hanamizu: the leaves never see the flowers, and the flowers never see the leaves. In Korea the flower is called sangsahwa, often translated as the flower of unrealized love.
A popular legend gives the two halves names. Manju guarded the flowers and Saka guarded the leaves, they fell in love and left their posts to meet, and as punishment they were bound to the same plant forever without seeing each other again.
The red spider lily in anime
Once you know all that, the anime appearances stop looking like set dressing. (Light spoilers ahead.)
- Demon Slayer. Red spider lilies run through the first season. The series then invents a blue spider lily: the key ingredient in the medicine that turned Muzan into the first demon, and the cure for his weakness to sunlight that he spends a thousand years hunting. Red marks death, and blue is the cure nobody can find.
- Hell Girl. The flower surrounds Ai Enma throughout the series. Every contract in the show sends someone across to the other side for good, which is exactly what higanbana means.
- Tokyo Ghoul. During Kaneki's torture, the flowers around him turn into red spider lilies as his gentler self gives way. The show uses the flower as the marker for the moment he stops being who he was.
- Inuyasha. The first ending theme, "My Will," sets red spider lilies against black, in a series built on separation across time and death.
- Dororo. Spider lily fields appear around loss and the war dead.
- Lycoris Recoil. The title comes from the flower's scientific name, Lycoris. The show's girls are pretty on the surface and lethal underneath, much like the plant. One of its animators even had to remind fans that the real flower is poisonous.
In all of them the shorthand is the same. The flower turns up at the point of no return.
Are blue spider lilies real?
Not the way anime draws them. Spider lilies come in red, white, and yellow, and one relative has pink petals with blue tips, but a true blue spider lily does not exist in nature. That is the joke at the heart of Demon Slayer's thousand-year search.
Our Higanbana collection comes in all three: red for the farewell flower, and blue and teal for the version that only exists in stories.
How to wear the spider lily pattern
The print is red, blue, or teal blooms on black, so it carries an outfit without much help.
- One loud piece. Pair the Premium Higanbana Leggings with a plain black top and let the legs do the talking.
- The full set. The Higanbana Sports Bra with the Higanbana Biker Shorts is the gym version: matching, pocketed, and not shy.
- Off-duty. A sweatshirt, hoodie, or skater dress from the collection takes it from the gym to the street.
For more ways to build the look, our pastel goth gym outfit ideas go through eight full outfits.
Quick answers
Is the red spider lily bad luck?
It is tied to death and parting, so older superstition says not to pick it, bring it indoors, or give it as a gift. Many people in Japan simply see it as a beautiful sign of autumn, and spider lily fields draw big crowds every September.
What is the difference between higanbana and manjushage?
They are two names for the same flower. Higanbana points to the equinox and the afterlife. Manjushage comes from Buddhist scripture and has a more hopeful tone.
Is the red spider lily poisonous?
Yes. The bulbs in particular contain lycorine and can cause vomiting and worse if eaten. Do not eat any part of the plant, and keep it away from pets.
When do red spider lilies bloom?
In Japan, around the autumn equinox in mid to late September, for roughly two weeks.
What does the red spider lily mean in anime?
Usually death, a final parting, or a character's point of no return. Demon Slayer, Hell Girl, Tokyo Ghoul, and Inuyasha all use it that way.
